(Artemis (Diana): The Maiden Huntress and Moon Goddess)
Artemis
(Diana): The Maiden Huntress and Moon Goddess
In Greek
mythology, the goddess Artemis is a complex and powerful figure, known to the
Romans as Diana. She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of
Apollo, the god of light and art. Artemis's birth was an extraordinary event.
After her own birth, she helped her twin brother Apollo come into the world,
which gave her a special place as the goddess of childbirth. Artemis's most
notable identities are the eternal maiden, the protector of wild animals, and
the goddess of the hunt.
Artemis's
Character and Powers
Artemis was a
wild and independent being. She loved to roam the mountains, forests, and
wilderness with her companion nymphs. She always carried a bow and arrow. She
was a protector of wild animals, but also hunted them when necessary.
A primary
aspect of Artemis's character was her fierce wrath and a desire for vengeance.
If mortals committed even the slightest offense against her, she would punish
them severely. She was extremely sensitive about her maidenhood and purity.
Once, a
hunter named Actaeon accidentally stumbled upon a secluded spring where the
goddess was bathing. For the crime of seeing her virgin form, Artemis
transformed him into a stag. His own hunting dogs, failing to recognize him,
tore him to pieces. This incident proves the terrifying nature of her revenge.
Relationship
with Orion
A rare
example of Artemis's vulnerability to a man is the famous giant-hunter Orion.
Many myths say that Artemis was fond of Orion. Apollo, however, did not approve
of their relationship. According to one popular story, Apollo challenged
Artemis to shoot an object swimming in the sea. When Artemis successfully shot
her arrow, she discovered that the object was Orion's head as he was swimming.
She had accidentally killed her beloved hunter. Grieving, Artemis placed Orion
in the sky as a constellation, which is still known as the Orion constellation
today.
Diana the
Moon Goddess and Endymion
Artemis's
other important identity is as the moon goddess, Diana. In this form, she
appears in a different light—calmer and more mysterious than her huntress
persona. It was in this form that she fell in love with the handsome mortal
youth, Endymion.
Artemis loved
Endymion so much that she wanted to keep him with her forever. She put him into
a deep sleep in a cave on Mount Latmos. Zeus gave him two options: to live a
normal life and face death, or to be granted eternal youth and immortality in
exchange for sleeping forever. Endymion chose the latter. Diana would visit him
every night and kiss his sleeping form. This story is an unusual example of
eternal love and immortality.
Worship and
Symbols
Artemis's
worship was highly popular in both the Greek and Roman empires. Her most famous
temple was the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the
Ancient World. It symbolized her purity and power. Her notable symbols include
the bow and arrow, the deer, the dog, and the moon.
Artemis is a
multifaceted goddess—on one hand, she is a fierce and vengeful protector of the
wild, and on the other, she protects women and children during childbirth. Her
vow of perpetual virginity gave her a distinct status among the other deities.
While she pushed away love at times, she also showed extreme devotion to those
she cared for.
