(Hermes (Mercury): The Messenger of the Gods and God of Commerce)

Hermes (Mercury): The Messenger of the Gods and God of Commerce

Hermes, known as Mercury in Roman mythology, is an extremely clever, versatile, and swift god in the Greek pantheon. He was the son of the king of the gods, Zeus, and Maia, an Atlas-daughter nymph. His primary job was to act as a messenger for the gods. He traveled seamlessly between heaven, the mortal world, and the Underworld, carrying news. He was a handsome, energetic, and swift youth. Both his hat and his sandals had wings, which helped him move with incredible speed.

Birth and Miraculous Childhood

Hermes's birth and childhood were highly unusual. He was born in a cave on Mount Cyllene. In the moments after his birth, he proved that he was no ordinary child. It is said that within just a few hours of his birth, he emerged from the cave and stole his older brother Apollo's cattle. He cleverly arranged the cattle's hooves to point backward, ensuring no one could follow their tracks.

Once, he was enchanted by a tortoise and transformed its shell into a lyre. Apollo was impressed by his creativity. At first, he was furious at Hermes for stealing his cattle. But when Hermes played the lyre he had created, Apollo was so captivated by the magical music that he forgot his anger. Apollo not only forgave Hermes but also gave him his sacred and magical staff, the caduceus, which became Hermes's main symbol.

Later, Hermes passed this magical power on to his son, Autolycus, who had an extraordinary talent for thievery. With this power, Autolycus managed to steal Mount Parnassus, located near Olympus.

Responsibilities and Unique Characteristics

Hermes was worshipped as the god of many things, which reflects the versatility of his character.

  • Messenger and Herald: His most important job was to be the gods' messenger. He often carried messages from Zeus to mortals. His winged hat and sandals were symbols of this role.
  • God of Travelers and Commerce: He is the god of roads, travelers, and merchants. Businesspeople would worship him for honesty and good fortune.
  • Patron of Thieves and Deceivers: Interestingly, he was also the god of thievery. This identity comes from his childhood story. He influenced the skills and luck of thieves.
  • God of Fire, Eloquence, and Innovation: He was the god of fire-making, the alphabet, and rhetoric. His influence extended to all kinds of sports, especially gymnastics, as well as innovation and games of chance.
  • Psychopomp: One of Hermes's most crucial roles was to guide the souls of the dead to the Underworld. After death, he acted as a guide to ensure they could travel to the underworld without any trouble. Although your text mentions "building a death realm," his role in traditional mythology was primarily to guide souls along the correct path.

Love Life and Offspring

Hermes had several lovers and children, which reveal his multifaceted character.

  • Aphrodite: Hermes had a love affair with the goddess of love, Aphrodite. The result of this relationship was a special child named Hermaphroditus, who was born with both male and female characteristics.
  • Dryope: She was a nymph. Their son was Pan, a deity with a half-human, half-goat body. Pan was the god of nature, forests, and shepherds.
  • Herse and Aglauros: Hermes once fell in love with a mortal woman named Herse, who was the daughter of King Cecrops of Athens. Herse was being guarded by her sister, Aglauros. When Hermes wanted to approach Herse, Aglauros demanded a large bribe. While Hermes went to get the money, the goddess Athena cunningly instilled jealousy in Aglauros's heart. Consequently, Aglauros blocked Hermes's path and refused to let him see her sister. Enraged, Hermes transformed her into a black stone.

Argus Panoptes and the Release of Io

Argus Panoptes was a gigantic and powerful giant with a hundred eyes all over his body. It was impossible to put him completely to sleep because while some of his eyes slept, the others remained vigilant.

The king of the gods, Zeus, once fell in love with the goddess Io, the daughter of the river god Inachus. Zeus's wife, the goddess Hera, found out about their secret love. To protect Io from Hera's wrath, Zeus transformed her into a white cow. But Hera was not satisfied. She cunningly asked Zeus for the cow as a gift and then entrusted her to the hundred-eyed Argus Panoptes to guard. Argus tied the cow under an olive tree and watched her day and night with his hundred eyes, so she could not go anywhere.

Seeing Io's pitiful condition, Zeus tasked Hermes with freeing her. Relying on his wit and cunning, Hermes set out to accomplish this daring feat. He disguised himself as a shepherd and sat next to Argus. Hermes began to play his magical flute and simultaneously told various sweet stories. Though initially cautious, Argus's eyes slowly began to close one by one due to Hermes's enchanting music and tales. Hermes realized that when Argus was fully asleep, no eyes were open.

Without any delay, Hermes drew his knife or sword and beheaded Argus. Thus, Io was freed. After this event, Hermes was given a new epithet: Argus-Slayer (Argeiphontes). In revenge, Hera placed Argus's hundred eyes on the tail feathers of her favorite bird, the peacock, which remains a symbol of the peacock's beauty today.

Helping Perseus Slay Medusa

Another important mission of Hermes was to help the hero Perseus. Perseus's king, Polydectes, out of jealousy, ordered him to bring back the head of the terrifying monster Medusa. Medusa was feared for her monstrous appearance. Her hair was made of snakes, and anyone who looked into her eyes would instantly turn to stone.

Hermes and Athena came forward to help Perseus on this dangerous quest. Hermes gave Perseus a sharp, curved sword or knife, which was capable of piercing Medusa's tough skin. At the same time, he warned Perseus not to look directly into Medusa's eyes.

Athena gave Perseus a shiny shield. Following Hermes's instructions, Perseus used the shield like a mirror. Without looking directly at Medusa, he approached her by looking at her reflection in the shield. When Medusa was asleep, Perseus used the sword given by Hermes, guided by the reflection, to cut off her head.

The sharp sword given by Hermes was crucial in this mission. Without his wise counsel and correct guidance, it would have been impossible for Perseus to defeat Medusa. This incident proves that Hermes was not just a messenger or a trickster but also one of the gods' greatest strategists and a patron of heroes.

  1. Focus on Versatility: We do not see Hermes merely as a messenger of the gods; he was a thief, a skilled craftsman, a protector of travelers, and a guide for the dead. This multifaceted character sets him apart from the other gods of Olympus. Hermes proves that it is not power or might, but rather intelligence, strategy, and versatile talent that can make a god indispensable. These stories teach us that in all aspects of life, it is not just about rules and discipline, but sometimes a bit of cunning and flexibility are also necessary.
  2. Highlight the Human Aspect: From Hermes's stories, we can see that even the gods are not above human emotions and flaws. His habit of stealing, his jokes with others, and his getting involved in love affairs—all these things bring him closer to mortals. His character possessed both the divine spark and a human-like mischievousness and emotion. Hermes is like a reflection of us, who are at once good and bad, responsible and whimsical.
  3. Emphasize Impact and Legacy: Hermes's influence was not limited to Greek mythology. He was known to the Romans as Mercury, and his influence can still be seen in our modern culture. He lives on as a symbol of communication, commerce, and travel. His symbol, the caduceus (a staff with snakes wrapped around it), is still used as a symbol of medicine and healing, which also hints at his healing powers. In this way, Hermes is not just a mythological character but a legacy that exists in our daily lives.
