হেস্তিয়া: অগ্নিশিখার চিরকুমারী (Hestia: The Eternal Virgin of the Flame)
হেস্তিয়া: অগ্নিশিখার
চিরকুমারী
প্রাচীন গ্রিসের
উঠানে হেস্তিয়া
এক শান্ত
শিখার নাম।
তিনি কেবল
পারিবারিক চুল্লি
আর পূজাবেদির
অধিষ্ঠাত্রী নন,
তিনি ছিলেন
গৃহের নিভৃত
সুখ আর
শান্তির প্রতিচ্ছবি।
গ্রিকরা তাই
সকল উপাসনার
প্রাক্কালে তাঁর
উদ্দেশ্যে প্রথম
নিবেদন করত
তাদের ভক্তি।
অলিম্পাসের কোলাহলপূর্ণ
জগতে তিনি
ছিলেন ব্যতিক্রম।
স্বর্গ বা
মর্ত্যের কোনো
যুদ্ধ-বিগ্রহে
কিংবা কলহে
নিজেকে জড়াননি
কখনো। সারাজীবন
কঠোরভাবে কৌমার্যব্রত
পালন করেছেন,
প্রেমের আহ্বানে
সাড়া দেননি
একবারও। অ্যাপোলো
আর পোসাইডনের
মতো দেবতারা
যখন তাঁর
প্রেমের জন্য
ব্যাকুল, হেস্তিয়া
তখন জিউসের
শিরে হাত
রেখে শপথ
করেন, তিনি
চিরকাল চিরকুমারী
থাকবেন। অলিম্পাসের
শান্তিরক্ষার কাজে
তিনি ছিলেন
এক নীরব
প্রহরী। তাই
জিউস বিধান
দেন যে,
মর্ত্যের মানুষ
দেবতাদের উদ্দেশ্যে
কোনো বলি
উৎসর্গ করার
আগে যেন
সর্বপ্রথম হেস্তিয়ার
উদ্দেশ্যে তা
নিবেদন করে।
একবার মর্ত্যলোকের
এক ভোজসভায়
দেবতারা নেমে
এসেছিলেন। সেখানে
হেস্তিয়াও উপস্থিত
ছিলেন। গভীর
রাতে যখন
সকলে পানমত্ত
হয়ে নিদ্রার
কোলে ঢলে
পড়েছে, তখন
সেই বাড়ির
মালিক প্রিয়াঁপাস
ঘুমন্ত হেস্তিয়ার
শ্লীলতা হানির
অপচেষ্টা করে।
ঠিক সেই
মুহূর্তে বাড়ির
একটি পোষা
গাধা বিকট
চিৎকার করে
ওঠে। সেই
চিৎকারে হেস্তিয়ার
ঘুম ভেঙে
যায় এবং
তিনি দেখতে
পান প্রিয়াঁপাস
তাঁকে অসম্মান
করতে উদ্যত
হয়েছে।
হেস্তিয়া কেবল
শান্তই নন,
তিনি দয়াবতীও।
কোনো ভক্ত
প্রাণভয়ে তাঁর
শরণাপন্ন হলে
তিনি তাকে
রক্ষা করেন।
গৃহ নির্মাণের
দেবী হিসেবেও
তাঁর পূজা
প্রচলিত ছিল।
এই কাহিনীর
গভীরে এক
গভীর নৈতিক
শিক্ষা লুকিয়ে
আছে। আতিথ্য
গৃহস্থের প্রধান
ধর্ম। বিশেষ
করে নারী
অতিথির সম্মান
ও শালীনতা
রক্ষা করা
গৃহস্বামীর অবশ্য
পালনীয় কর্তব্য।
কিন্তু প্রিয়াঁপাস
সেই ধর্ম
লঙ্ঘন করে
চরম পাপাচারে
লিপ্ত হয়েছিল।
Hestia:
The Eternal Virgin of the Flame
In the
courtyards of ancient Greece, Hestia was the name of a calm flame. She
was not merely the goddess of the family hearth and altar; she was the
embodiment of a home's quiet happiness and peace. Therefore, the Greeks would
first offer their reverence to her at the beginning of all their prayers.
In the
bustling world of Olympus, she was an exception. She never involved herself in
any war or conflict, whether in heaven or on earth. Throughout her life, she
strictly maintained her vow of virginity, never responding to the call of love.
When gods like Apollo and Poseidon were desperate for her affection, Hestia
placed her hand on Zeus's head and swore that she would remain an eternal
virgin. She was a silent guardian of peace on Olympus. Thus, Zeus ordained that
mortals must first make their offerings to Hestia before sacrificing to any
other gods.
On one
occasion, the gods descended to a mortal feast. Hestia was also present. Late
at night, when everyone had fallen into a drunken sleep, the owner of the
house, Priapus, attempted to violate the sleeping Hestia. At that very moment,
a pet donkey in the house brayed loudly. The sound woke Hestia, and she saw
Priapus poised to dishonor her.
Hestia was
not only tranquil but also compassionate. She would protect any devotee who
sought refuge with her out of mortal fear. She was also worshipped as the
goddess of home construction. A profound moral lesson is hidden within this
story. Hospitality is the primary duty of a householder. It is an essential
obligation for a host to protect the honor and decency of their guests,
especially women. However, Priapus violated this sacred duty and engaged in a
grave sin.
