Greek
God of the Sea: Poseidon and His Empire
In ancient Greek
mythology, one of the most powerful and influential gods is Poseidon,
known as Neptune in Roman mythology. He is not only the god of the sea
but also of earthquakes and horses. As one of the 12 principal gods of Olympus,
his position is of great importance. He is the brother of King of the Gods,
Zeus, and the brother of Hades. The three brothers divided the universe among
themselves. Zeus got the sky, Hades got the underworld, and Poseidon got the
vast kingdom of the sea.
Poseidon's
Birth and Family
Poseidon is the
second son of Cronus and Rhea. His other siblings include Zeus,
Hades, Hera, Hestia, and Demeter. From birth, his
power was immense, which made him a rival to Zeus. At one time, he even
rebelled against Zeus's undisputed rule, but in the end, he remained content
with his kingdom of the sea.
Poseidon's wife is
the sea goddess Amphitrite. Their union gave birth to a son named Triton,
whose body was half-man and half-fish. However, Poseidon also had relationships
with many other goddesses and mortal women besides his wife. The complications
of these relationships and his jealous wife's revenge stories are well-known in
Greek mythology.
Poseidon's
Power and Wealth
Poseidon's main
symbol is the trident he holds in his hand. With this trident, he could
calm the sea or raise powerful storms. When his rage reached its peak, the sea
would become turbulent, leading to dangerous typhoons, famines, and epidemics.
Poseidon's residence
was a magnificent golden palace deep in the sea. This palace was
illuminated by the light of phosphorus and was decorated with coral and sea
flowers. When Poseidon rode his chariot, it was pulled by water nymphs,
wave-like horses, and sea monsters. The waves of the sea themselves served as
his chariot horses.
Love,
Jealousy, and Scylla's Curse
Poseidon fell in love
with a sea nymph named Scylla, which caused immense jealousy in his
wife, Amphitrite. Driven by revenge, Amphitrite mixed some magical herbs in the
water where Scylla used to bathe. As soon as Scylla entered the water, the
lower part of her body transformed into a monstrous sea creature with six
terrifying dog-like heads and 12 legs. In this new form, the monster took
refuge in a large cave on one side of the Strait of Sicily. There, she would
lie in wait for sailors and devour them.
Opposite Scylla was a
whirlpool named Charybdis. It is said that Charybdis was a daughter of
Poseidon. She was very gluttonous and once stole and ate Zeus's cattle. This
angered Zeus so much that he transformed Charybdis into a terrifying whirlpool.
Charybdis would swallow a huge amount of seawater three times a day and then
spit it out, creating a powerful whirlpool. Any ship or boat caught in this
whirlpool would be destroyed.
From
One Danger to Another
For sailors, escaping
these two dangers was almost impossible. On one side was Scylla's cave, where
she waited with her six heads to tear apart the sailors' flesh. On the other
side was Charybdis's death trap, where ships would sink in an instant.
Navigating between the two meant facing an extreme dilemma. No matter which way
they tried to escape, they were sure to face certain danger on the other side.
For this reason, when
a person finds themselves in a situation with two equally dangerous options,
where neither can be avoided, people in Europe still say, "Between a Scylla
and a Charybdis." This saying reflects a profound truth from
ancient Greek mythology.
Other
Sea Deities and Their Roles
In Greek mythology,
there were many other important sea deities besides Poseidon.
- Proteus: This son of Poseidon was a
soothsayer with an extraordinary ability to change shape.
- Nereus: He was an ancient and benevolent
sea god. He had fifty daughters called the Nereids. He was
generally the lord of the calm and tranquil parts of the sea.
- Oceanus: He was another sea deity who had
a large family with many wives and children. One of his wives, Electra,
would cry yellow stones from her eyes when she was sad.
- Thetis: One of the principal sea
goddesses, Thetis was the mother of the famous Greek hero Achilles.
Thetis was also considered a goddess of peace. When a mortal woman named
Halcyon jumped into the sea in grief over her husband's death, Thetis,
seeing her sorrow, turned her and her dead husband into birds so they
could live together in a nest.
- Glaucus: A mortal man who fell into the
sea and, by the grace of the sea deities, gained immortality and was
transformed into a minor sea god.
King
of the Underworld: Pluto (Hades)
The king of the
underworld in Greek mythology is Pluto, known as Hades in Roman
mythology. He is not one of the 12 main gods of Olympus because his kingdom is
not heaven, but the underworld. His kingdom was called Hades.
Pluto's
Appearance and Empire
Pluto's appearance
was jet-black, symbolizing his dark empire. His throne was made of black ebony
wood, and his chariot horses were also black. He always carried a two-pronged
spear and wore a special helmet that could make him invisible. In the
mortal world, his worship was held late at night, and the raw blood of
sacrificed animals was offered to him.
Pluto's
Love and Persephone
Pluto's life was not
entirely harsh. There was a soft and bright side to his dark heart, and that
was his love for his wife, Persephone. Pluto took Persephone to the
underworld and made her his queen. They made a deal that Persephone would stay
with Pluto in the underworld for six months a year and return to Earth for the
other six. During her time in the underworld's impenetrable darkness,
Persephone's essence would change, and she would transform into the goddess of
witches, Hecate.
