Sentence বা ‘বাক্য’
Sentence বা ‘বাক্য’
ভাব প্রকাশের অন্যতম
মাধ্যম হচ্ছে Sentence
Subject
ও একটি Finite Verb
থাকে। যেমন—
Mr. Jakirul
Islam reads a novel. (জনাব জাকিরুল ইসলাম উপন্যাস পড়েন।)
যদি নিয়ম না মেনে
এভাবে লিখি—
Mr. Jakirul
Islam a novel reads.
তাহলে বাক্য হবে না।
কারণ শব্দগুলো নিয়ম অনুযায়ী সাজানো হয়নি।
শব্দসমষ্টি যা
সম্পূর্ণ অর্থ প্রকাশ করে, তাকে Sentence
বলে।
তবে একটি Word দিয়েও একটি Sentence হতে পারে। ইংরেজিতে
কথাবার্তায় আমরা এ ধরনের Sentence ব্যবহার করি। এ ধরনের Sentence-কে One-Word Sentence বলে। এগুলো Verb
দিয়ে শুরু হলে Imperative Sentence
হয়। যেমন—
- Catch
- Come
- Go
- Listen
- Tell
- Sleep
- Hurry
Verb ছাড়াও Single-Word
Sentence
Interrogative/Question:
Who? / Why? / Where? / When?
Declaratives:
Me / Book
(যদি প্রশ্ন করে কী চাও?)
Locatives:
Here / There / Up / Below
Nominatives/Vocatives:
Mithu / Sanowar
Adverbs:
Hi / Yes / No / Probably
Interjection:
Go! / Shit! / Nice!
নিচের Context-টি
লক্ষ্য করলে খুব সহজেই বিষয়টি পরিষ্কার হয়ে যাবে যে, একটি Word দিয়েও একটি Sentence হতে পারে।
Moin: Is it your book?
(Multi-Word Sentence)
Saima: Yes.
(Single-Word Sentence)
আবার, নিচের শব্দগুলো
লক্ষ্য করি—
(i) Saima good a girl
is.
(ii) better to know to learn is it than.
এখানে শব্দগুলো দ্বারা
কোনো পূর্ণ অর্থ প্রকাশ পায়নি, কারণ শব্দগুলো সঠিকভাবে সাজানো হয়নি।
এবার শব্দগুলো
সঠিকভাবে সাজিয়ে (Correct Order)
নিচে লেখা হলো—
(i) Saima is a good girl.
(সায়মা ভালো মেয়ে।)
(ii) It is better to know how to learn than to know.
(কীভাবে শিখতে হয় তা জানার চেয়ে কীভাবে জানতে হয় তা জানা ভালো।)
এখানে শব্দগুলো একটি
পূর্ণ অর্থ (complete sense)
প্রকাশ করতে পেরেছে। এখন আমরা এগুলোর প্রত্যেকটিকে Sentence বা ‘বাক্য’ বলতে পারি।
সুতরাং, আমরা Sentence-এর প্রধান তিনটি বৈশিষ্ট্য
পাই—
- A word or a group of words — শব্দ বা শব্দগুচ্ছ
- Complete sense — পরিপূর্ণ অর্থ
- Correct order of words — সুবিন্যস্ত শব্দ
Definition
এক বা একাধিক
সুবিন্যস্ত শব্দ বা শব্দসমষ্টি যা সম্পূর্ণ অর্থ প্রদান করে, তাকে Sentence বলে।
Examples
(i) Beauty is an enormous gift.
(সৌন্দর্য একটি বিরাট উপহার।)
(ii) The curves of your lips rewrite history.
(তোমার ঠোঁটের বাঁক নতুন করে ইতিহাস লেখে।)
Note
Verb ছাড়াও Multi-Word Sentence গঠন করা যায়।
এগুলোর অর্থ context
অনুযায়ী হয়। এগুলো পরিপূর্ণ বাক্য নয়; কারণ Context of Situation ছাড়া এগুলো phrase হয়।

Sentences According to Meaning
(অর্থ অনুযায়ী বাক্য)
অর্থ অনুযায়ী পাঁচ
প্রকার Sentence-এর আলোচনা করা হলো—
- Assertive Sentence — বিবৃতিমূলক বাক্য
- Interrogative Sentence — প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য
- Imperative Sentence — আদেশসূচক বাক্য
- Optative Sentence — ইচ্ছা বা প্রার্থনাসূচক বাক্য
- Exclamatory Sentence — আবেগসূচক বাক্য
1. Assertive Sentence (বিবৃতিমূলক বাক্য)

উপরের (i) নম্বর
Sentence-এ the sky
সম্পর্কে এবং (ii) নম্বর Sentence-এ bad
habits সম্পর্কে বিবৃতি প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। সুতরাং, উপরোক্ত দুটি
Sentence-ই Assertive Sentence-এর
অন্তর্ভুক্ত।
Assertive Sentence-কে
Statement বলা হয়। কোনো
কোনো Grammarian Statement-কে Declarative
বা Indicative Sentence-ও
বলে থাকেন।

2. Interrogative Sentence (প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য)
Interrogative
Sentence
দ্বারা প্রশ্ন করা হয় বা প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়।
Examples
(i) Do you have any aim? (তোমার কি কোনো
লক্ষ্য আছে?)
(ii) How do you do? (তুমি কেমন আছ?)
ব্যাখ্যা:
উপরের (i) নম্বর
Sentence-এ কারও aim
সম্পর্কে জানতে চাওয়া হয়েছে এবং (ii) নম্বর Sentence-এ কোনো ব্যক্তি কেমন আছে তা
জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়েছে। সুতরাং, এগুলো Interrogative
Sentence।
Note
(i) Question বা
প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্যে Auxiliary Verb-টি
Nominative/Subject-এর
পূর্বে বসে।
(ii) Interrogative
Sentence-এর শেষে Note of Interrogation
(?) বসে।
ইংরেজিতে সাধারণত তিন
ধরনের Question দেখা যায়—
- Yes/No Question / Verbal Question
- Wh-question
- Tag Question
(i) Yes/No Question / Verbal
Question
যে Interrogative Sentence
কোনো একটি Verb দিয়ে
শুরু হয় এবং যার উত্তর Yes/No
দিয়ে দেওয়া যায়, তাকে Yes/No Question
বলে। একে Close-ended Question-ও
বলা হয়।
Is it
raining? (বৃষ্টি
কি হচ্ছে?)
Do you want
tea or coffee? (তুমি
কি চা না কফি চাও?)
Should I make
him a call? (আমার
কি তাকে ফোন করা উচিত?)
Is it so? (এটা কি এমন?)
উপরের প্রশ্নগুলো
বিভিন্ন Auxiliary Verb
দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে এবং এগুলোর উত্তর স্বাভাবিকভাবে Yes অথবা No
দিয়ে দেওয়া সম্ভব। তাই এগুলো Yes/No
Interrogative।
Note
Do, did, am,
is, are, was, were, have, has, had, shall, will ইত্যাদি Verb দ্বারা শুরু হওয়া
প্রশ্নকে Verbal Question
বলা হয়।
Structure of Verbal Question
Auxiliary
Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Extension + ?
Are you going
to market?
— Yes, I am.
Do you like
birds?
— Yes, I do.
Have you done
your homework?
— No, I haven't.
(ii) Wh-question
যে Interrogative
Sentence কোনো Wh-word
যেমন Who, Which, What, When, Where,
Why, How ইত্যাদি দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং যার উত্তর পূর্ণাঙ্গ বা open-ended হয়, তাকে Wh-Interrogative Sentence বা Wh-question বলে।
What
happened? (কী
ঘটেছিল?)
Where are you
from? (তুমি
কোথা থেকে এসেছ?)
How is
everything? (সবকিছু
কেমন চলছে?)
উপরের প্রশ্নগুলো what, where, how ইত্যাদি Wh-word
দিয়ে গঠিত হয়েছে। তাই এগুলো Wh-question।
এগুলোর উত্তর অবশ্যই open-ended হতে পারে। অর্থাৎ, বিভিন্ন ব্যক্তি বিভিন্নভাবে
উত্তর দিতে পারে।
Note
Who, Which,
What, When, Where, Why, How ইত্যাদি Wh-word দ্বারা যে প্রশ্ন শুরু হয়, তাকে Wh-question বলে।
Who-এর ক্ষেত্রে বিশেষ নিয়ম
Who-এর পরে সরাসরি Verb অথবা Auxiliary
Verb + Main Verb বসতে পারে। যেমন—
Who knows me?
(আমাকে কে
চেনে?)
Who is making
a noise? (কে
গোলমাল করছে?)
Who hated
you? (কে
তোমাকে ঘৃণা করত?)
সতর্কতা
Interrogative
Sentence-এ Pronoun
(I/you/we/he/she/they/it)-এর পূর্বে কখনো পূর্ণাঙ্গ not বসে না।
ভুল: Cannot he...?
সঠিক: Can't he...?
তবে Noun-এর পূর্বে not বসতে পারে।
Can Rana not
go?
3. Imperative Sentence
(আদেশসূচক বাক্য)
Imperative
Sentence
দ্বারা কোনো আদেশ, নিষেধ, উপদেশ, অনুরোধ ইত্যাদি বোঝানো হয়।

(iv) অনুরোধ (request)
(v) প্রস্তাব (proposal)
প্রকাশ পেয়েছে। সুতরাং
এগুলো Imperative Sentence।
Note

Sentence-এ Subject সাধারণত উহ্য থাকে এবং Sentence-টি Verb দিয়ে শুরু হয়।
Give me some
time to decide. (সিদ্ধান্ত
গ্রহণের জন্য আমাকে কিছু সময় দাও।)
Stop talking.
(কথা বলা বন্ধ করো।)
বিশেষ ব্যবহার
জোরালোভাবে কোনো কিছু

(v) Permission
অনুমতি প্রকাশ করতে Let-এর পরে First Person-এর Objective
Form me এবং Third

ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Let her do
whatever she likes. (তাকে তার যা ইচ্ছা তা করতে দাও।)
Let me come
in. (আমাকে
ভেতরে আসতে দাও।)
Structure of Imperative Sentence

Do not eat
stale food. (বাসি
খাবার খেয়ো না।)
(iii) Let-যুক্ত Imperative Sentence
Let-যুক্ত Imperative
Sentence দুইভাবে লেখা যায়। প্রস্তাব বোঝালে Let us এবং অনুমতি বোঝালে Let + me/him/her/them ব্যবহৃত হয়।
উভয় ক্ষেত্রেই us/me/him/her/them-এর পরে Verb-এর
Present Form বসে।
(a) Let + me/him/her/them + (not) + Verb-এর
Present Form + Full stop (.)

Request-এর আরও একটি Structure
Would/Could/Can/Will
+ Subject + Verb-এর Present Form + Note of Interrogation (?)
Could you
please help me? (আপনি
কি দয়া করে আমাকে সাহায্য করবেন?)
Note:
Imperative Sentence-এ
you উহ্য থাকার কারণ
হলো, এ ধরনের বাক্যে Subject সাধারণত Second Person—তুমি,
তোমরা, তুই, তোরা, আপনি, আপনারা ইত্যাদি। এদের ইংরেজি রূপ you। তাই Imperative Sentence-এ you সাধারণত উহ্য থাকে।
4. Optative Sentence (ইচ্ছা বা
প্রার্থনাসূচক বাক্য)
Optative
Sentence
দ্বারা ইচ্ছা, প্রার্থনা বা আশীর্বাদ বোঝানো হয়।
Examples
(i) May Allah bless you.

Structure of Optative Sentence
(a) May
+ Subject + Verb + Extension.
May you
prosper in life. (তুমি জীবনে উন্নতি করো।)
May Allah
help you in distress. (বিপদে আল্লাহ তোমাকে সাহায্য করুন।)
কখনো কখনো May বাদ দিয়েও Optative Sentence
ব্যবহার করা হয়।
(b) Long
live + Noun.
Long live the
king./(May the king live long. (রাজা
দীর্ঘজীবী হোন।)
Allah save
us./(May Allah save us. (আল্লাহ আমাদের
রক্ষা করুন।)
Note:
এ ক্ষেত্রে Allah saves us. লিখলে সেটি Assertive Sentence হবে।
Optative Sentence-এর
Negative রূপও হতে পারে। যেমন—
May he not
get sick. (তিনি
যেন অসুস্থ না হন।)
Optative Sentence
দ্বারা অভিশাপও দেওয়া যায়। যেমন—
May you not
be happy. (তুমি
যেন সুখী না হও।)
May Allah
destroy your clan. (আল্লাহ তোমাদের বংশ ধ্বংস করুন।)

Sentence-এ What/How
বসলে Verb সাধারণত Subject-এর আগে বসে। কিন্তু Exclamatory Sentence-এর ক্ষেত্রে
Verb Subject-এর পরে বসে এবং Sentence-এর শেষে ! বসে।
How happy you
are! (তুমি
কতই না সুখী!)

(a) Simple Sentence
(সরল বাক্য)
যে Sentence-এ
একটিমাত্র Subject (কর্তা) এবং একটিমাত্র Finite Verb (সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া) থাকে,
তাকে Simple Sentence
বলে। Simple Sentence-এ একটি Independent Clause বা Principal Clause থাকে, কিন্তু
কোনো Subordinate Clause থাকে না।
একটি Subject ও একটি
Finite Verb-যুক্ত বাক্যকে Independent
Clause বা Principal
Clause বলে। Principal Clause-এর পূর্বে যদি since, as, when, because, though, although, if,
unless, after, before, till, lest, as long as, as soon as, what, how, where
ইত্যাদি Conjunction থাকে, তাহলে সেটিকে Subordinate
Clause বা Dependent
Clause বলে।
Simple Sentence-এ Compound Subject অথবা Compound Predicate, অথবা উভয়ই থাকতে
পারে।
Compound
Subject হলো and, but বা or দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই বা ততোধিক
Subject।
Compound
Predicate হলো
and, but বা or দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই বা ততোধিক Noun
বা Pronoun, যা Object হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। তবে এক্ষেত্রে একটিমাত্র Finite Verb
থাকবে। দুটি Finite Verb যুক্ত হলে তা Compound
Sentence হয়ে যায়।
যেমন:
1. Bangladesh
has some beautiful places. (বাংলাদেশে কিছু সুন্দর স্থান রয়েছে।)
2. The tea
garden in Sylhet and the forests of the Sundarbans are my favourite tourist
attractions. (সিলেটের
চা-বাগান এবং সুন্দরবনের বন আমার প্রিয় পর্যটনকেন্দ্র।)
এখানে The tea garden in Sylhet এবং the forests of the Sundarbans—এই দুটি Subject and
দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়েছে। তাই এই সম্পূর্ণ অংশটি Compound Subject।
3. I visited
Khan Jahan Ali's Mazar and the Shat Gambuj Mosque.
(আমি খান জাহান আলীর মাজার এবং ষাট গম্বুজ মসজিদ পরিদর্শন করেছিলাম।)
এখানে Khan Jahan Ali's Mazar এবং the Shat Gambuj Mosque—এই দুটি Object and
দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়েছে। তাই এই সম্পূর্ণ অংশটি Compound Predicate-এর উদাহরণ।
Note:
and, but, or, otherwise, else, nor,
however, therefore, so ইত্যাদি দ্বারা দুটি সম্পূর্ণ বাক্য যুক্ত হলে সেই বাক্যটি সাধারণত Compound Sentence হয়।
Simple Sentence-এর নিয়মাবলি
USE OF “because of”

(i) প্রদত্ত Sentence দুটির মধ্যে যে
Sentence-টি দ্বারা কারণ বোঝায়, সেই Sentence-এর প্রথমে because of বসে।

নির্দেশ করা হয়েছে। তাই প্রথম Sentence-এর প্রথমে Because of বসেছে + Subject He-এর Possessive Form his বসেছে + is-এর পরিবর্তে being বসেছে + প্রথম Sentence-এর বাকি

দ্বিতীয় Sentence-এর বাকি অংশ।

কোনো পরিবর্তন হয় না।

প্রথম Sentence-এর Subject + Verb +
too + Adjective/Adverb + to + দ্বিতীয় Sentence-এর মূল Verb থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত
অংশ।
